CREATIVE STORYTELLING WITH CHILDREN

A professional learning workshop for childcare professionals, librarians, teachers, parents, carers, community workers and storytellers

Workshop Length: 6 hours with morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea

Group Size: Limit 30

Everyone loves a good story, and this workshop will teach you the techniques behind the ancient art of storytelling. Anna Jarrett, a professional storyteller from Australia, will guide you through the process of choosing, learning and telling a really good tale. A well told story is a great teaching tool, a wonderful form of entertainment and a way to connect children with books, to learning and to their own stories. This workshop will help you to bring stories to life so that you and your children, are "right there" in the magic of the moment, in the story.

Anna will model many different ways of telling stories using music, song, dance, drama and puppets. Drawing from a diverse range of stories from around the world, you will learn how to tap into your imaginations, natural creativity and life experience, to craft a story ready for retelling. Working from the heart of the story, you will learn how to remember a story sequence, develop engaging characters and weave words that capture and keep children’s attention.

One of the hardest things about telling a story, is getting started. This workshop will develop your confidence to play with new ideas, to take creative risks and to have fun playing with stories in a supportive environment. You will learn how to choose and to adapt stories for different children’s' needs, abilities and interests, developing your ability to improvise and to be totally flexible.

Throughout the day, there will be time for us to share our own stories about working creatively with children, and to explore some of the planning and practicalities which set you up for a successful storytelling session. You will learn some creative strategies for storytelling together and discover new ways to weave storytelling into the rhythms and routines of children’s daily lives.

For beginning storytellers as well as "old pros", this workshop will be a fresh look into the art of storytelling, with lots of laughter and opportunities for pure play.

STORYTELLING TOGETHER

A professional learning workshop for childcare professionals, librarians, teachers,

parents, carers, community workers and storytellers

Workshop Length: 3 Hours with morning tea

Group Size: Limit 25

Join Anna for an inspiring morning of multicultural storytelling and creative play. This workshop will help you to develop your creative imaginations and confidence, giving you the support that you need to tell new stories and to try new ways of bringing stories to life, beyond the pages of books.

You will learn how to choose and to adapt stories for different children’s' needs, abilities and interests, as well as how to captivate and to keep children’s attention using props, drama, musical instruments and puppets. Steps for planning a successful storytelling session for small and large groups will be outlined, along with suggestions for putting together your own storytelling treasure bag.

The focus of this workshop will be on telling stories together, with attention to specific storytelling skills including creative voice use, whole body expression, personal styles and making connections with your story listeners. We will also explore the differences between formal and informal storytelling and discuss the important role which storytelling plays in our family and community lives.

For beginning storytellers as well as "old pros", this workshop will be a fresh look into the art of storytelling, with lots of laughter and opportunities for pure play.
