ORAL HISTORY & FAMILY STORIES
Recording and documenting community histories and
life stories for individuals, families, communities and organizations Story Studio was founded in 2003 to connect people and places through stories. Recording community histories and life stories is an intimate way to empower people to tell tales from their life in their own words and in their own way. These recordings provide a valuable first person document which can be used to help individuals, families and communities to explore their identity, to celebrate their heritage and to discover springboards for creating new stories. Knowing
the joy that family history and sharing stories brings, I'm pleased to be
able to help people record their stories. I have developed a unique
storytellers approach to oral history, which facilitates an intimate process
of unlocking memories, finding a thematic order to random stories and
crafting stories for retelling with an authentic voice. STORY SERVICES

RECENT PROGRAMS & EVENTS ORAL HISTORY & STORYTELLING SEMINAR With Anna Jarrett A Storytellers Approach to Oral History Workshop Description Join
professional storyteller and oral history facilitator, Anna Jarrett, in a
fresh look at oral history practice and philosophy.
Anna
will explore the depths of meaning within oral history as story. This
workshop will give you insights into the complexities and sensitivities of
working with stories at every stage of oral history production from research
to final representation. You will take a look at how the context of the
interview shapes the story and how the process and form of representation
impacts on the layers of truth within the story. It's
a hearty look at the contemporary role of oral historians as story listeners,
story custodians, community cultural workers, media producers and friends. Background This
workshop has been developed as a way for me to share what I see as an
emerging process in oral history practice. My insights, methods and stories
are drawn from a combination of working on an oral history audio installation
on the Kangaroo Valley pioneer dairy farmers (for the Kangaroo Valley Pioneer
Museum Park ) as well as privately commissioned life stories on CD. I
have presented this workshop at the conference for Oral History
Association Australia (OHAA) in 2007, as well as for the Oral History
Association NSW Seminar Series in July 2008. I
look forward to more opportunities to share “A Storyteller’s Approach to Oral
History” with you. A
review of the workshop will be published in the next edition of Voiceprint
(OHA NSW). An
article about the first stage of this emerging process was published in
Voiceprint & is available on my website (put
a link here to published articles-Voiceprint – A Storytellers Approach) A
full program for the National Oral History Conference in 2007, “Old Stories, History Alive! Audio Installation at Kangaroo Valley Pioneer Museum Park In 2005, I was commissioned to interview the pioneer families of Kangaroo Valley in New South Wales. Traditionally dairy and cedar country, this region was settled early in Australian colonial history. The main street of town and the Valley region hold a lot of history and there are seniors in the community who know this history first hand. History Alive is an oral history project which documents and to celebrates these stories with a permanent audio installation in the Kangaroo Valley Pioneer Museum Park (KVPMP).
