OLD STORIES NEW WAYS

National Oral History Conference

September 27 – 30, 2007

Brisbane, Australia

 visit website

Join us in Brisbane for this annual gathering of oral history practitioners, academics and enthusiasts.  The conference addresses the many uses of oral history in media such as film, video, playback and other theatre, radio, exhibitions and multimedia.  I will be presenting a workshop on:

A STORYTELLERS APPROACH TO ORAL HISTORY

This workshop will guide you through some of the processes which can be used in oral history to facilitate the stories being told in a focused and personalized way. Working from the model “History Alive” project at Kangaroo Valley Pioneer Museum Park (KVPMP), 2005, Anna will discuss her storytelling methodology which aims to maintain authentic voices. Drawing from a combination of visualization, emotional memories, story sharing, story crafting and reflection, Anna invites you to take a look inside both the stories being told in interviews as well as the dynamics of the relationship between the listener (interviewer) and the teller (interviewee).

We all have stories to tell. The way these stories are told depends on who they are being told, where they are being told, the conditions they are told under and what they are being told for. This workshop will be a hearty look at the role of oral historians as story listeners, story custodians, community cultural workers and friends.
